BERWICK Village Chamber of Commerce has called on business people not to sign garbage collection contracts for commercial waste collection in Berwick Village.

The chamber during its Monday 21 August meeting was told that the City of Casey Council had called for expressions of interest from waste collection firms to tender for a single collection service in the village commercial area.

Casey manager of engineering and environmental services David Richardson told the meeting that the council had received several expressions of interest from firms.

These closed last Friday.

He also asked the chamber to nominate a person to sit on a selection panel to select a suitable provider.

He warned, however, that some companies were out trying to sign traders to longterm contracts in lieu of the council plans for a single provider.

He said some people were being asked to sign five year contracts and asked the chamber members not to sign because this would create difficulty in setting up a new system.

The council system would have landscaped corrals in which bins will be housed and kept clean and tidy, he said.

The chamber decided to ask its members not to sign contracts until a council decision has been made on a system of waste management for the village.
