EMERALD residents are mounting a push for a new pool in their town. They say their closest swimming facility is at Monbulk which is outside Cardinia Shire. A petition supporting a pool has been signed by almost 1300 people. Councillors at their meeting on Monday agreed to undertake a feasibility study for an Emerald pool during the 200607 financial year. The council set aside $20,000 in this years budget for the study. Ranges Ward councillors Graeme Legge and Ed Chatwin led the push for the council to look into the issue. People in the Hills area are going outside the shire to swim, Cr Chatwin said. A swimming pool in Emerald is a great idea. The move comes as the council continues to prepare for a decision about the future of Pakenhams outdoor pool. Closed since 2001, the council is considering reopening the pool at a possible cost of about $750,000. Tenders have been sought from contractors to restore the 40yearold facility. The council also agreed on Monday to seek funding from the State Governments Better Pools program for the proposed refurbishment.
